This Service Information bulletin replaces S.I. 09 04 99 dated December 1999.

SUBJECT:
Steering Column does Not Move to Correct Position

MODEL:
E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 Series) Vehicles produced Sept 1, 1999 to May 8, 2000

Situation:
Car and Key Memory offers a selection which allows the seat, steering column and mirrors to move to the position last used for an individual key, either when unlocking with the remote control key, or when opening the driver's door.

With this selection "active" in CKM, and when "unlocking" or at "open door", the steering column either moves in/out to an undefined position, or does not move in/out at all.

Cause:
Software error in Seat/Steering module (SM/LSM) SW 10 and SW 11

Procedure:
On a customer complaint basis,

1. Install SM/LSM module with software version SW 12, or later

2. Using DIS, or MoDiC, code the SM/LSM module:

-- Select "Coding/Programing"

-- Select "ZCS Coding"

-- Select "E38" or "E39"

-- Select "Recoding"

-- Select "SM", and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the coding process.

3. Using DIS, or MoDiC, set CKM seat setting to "Active"

-- Select "Coding/Programing"

-- Select "Car Memory"

-- Select "Seat/Mirror Memory"

-- Select "Seat Setting"

-- Select either "When locking" or "When opening door" (as requested by the customer)

-- Set selection "Active"

-- Select "Set Vehicle" and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the coding process.
