Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Procedure

1. Open the right rear trim panel in the trunk.

2. Check the wiring at the connector X1806 (1) of the battery isolation switch (2).

If there is a wire found in slot 12 of the isolation switch connector X1806, the retrofit harness does NOT NEED TO BE INSTALLED. Go to step 24 of this procedure.

If no wire is found at pin 12 of X1806, then the retrofit harness MUST BE INSTALLED. Proceed with the following steps.

3. Disconnect the vehicle's starter and system batteries. For procedure instruction, please refer to RA 12 00... (BMW TIS).

4. Remove the lower trim cover of the steering column. For procedure instruction, please refer to RA 32 31 020 (BMW TIS).

5. Remove the driver's side lower trim panel with the knee bolster.

6. Remove the pedal assembly trim panel.

7. Remove the side trim panel in the driver's side footwell.

8. Remove the driver's side front and rear sill step covers. For procedure instruction, please refer to RA 51 47 000 and RA 51 47 030 (BMW TIS).

9. Remove the drive's side lower B-pillar trim panel. For procedure instruction, please refer to RA 51 43 150 (BMW TIS).

10. Remove the rear parcel shelf. For procedure instruction, please refer to RA 51 46 005 (BMW TIS).

11. Undo the wiring duct under the rear bench seat.

12. Remove the right side wheel housing trim panel in the trunk. For procedure instruction, please refer to RA 51 47 151 (BMW TIS).

13. Replace the ignition switch (please refer to RA 61 31 020 for replacement instruction).

14. Route the retrofit wiring harness (1) along the vehicles existing wiring harness up to connector X33 (2) on the ignition switch.

15. Insert the brown/black wire with a female pin connector (3) into slot 4 of connector X33.

16. Insert the blue/brown wire with a female pin connector (4) into slot 11 of connector X33.

17. Route the retrofit wiring harness (1) along the vehicle's wiring harness towards the left side of driver's footwell. Secure both harnesses together with cable ties (2).

18. Route the retrofit wiring harness underneath the cable protection cover (1) up to the comb-type connector X10012 (3) (ground splices).

19. Insert the comb-type connector pin of the brown/black wire (2) into the ground connector X10012 (3).

20. Route the blue/brown wire (1) of the retrofit wiring harness from the comb-type connector (2) (X10012) towards the rear of the vehicle, along the vehicle's wiring harness.

Route the wire underneath the cable ducts (5) (under rear bench seat), and then to the right and up, towards the battery isolation switch (4) in the trunk.

21. Route the blue/brown wire (1) in the trunk along the vehicle's wiring harness to connector X1806 (4) of the battery isolation switch (5). Tie the excessive lengths of blue/black wire back in several loops (3) above the isolation switch. Secure the wire with cable ties (2).

22. Insert the male pin connector of the blue/brown wire into slot 12 of the connector X1806 (4) of the isolation switch.

23. Check the functionality of the new ignition switch with a multimeter connected between pin 12 of the connector X1806 (of isolation switch) and the ground. With the ignition key removed (ignition OFF), the measured resistance should be infinitely high (open circuit).

With the ignition ON (KL 15), the measured resistance must be less then 1 Ohm.

24. Check the part number on the label of the battery isolation switch (1).

If the part number is: 61 35 6 906 383, then no more actions are required.

If the part number differs from that listed above, the isolation switch MUST BE REPLACED. Proceed with the following steps.

25. Unplug the connectors (1) at the insulation switch (3). Remove the two hexagonal nuts (2) and replace the battery isolation switch.

NOTE:
Illustration shows the configuration for vehicles manufactured after 03/99. Vehicles produced prior to that date, have the additional 250 Amp generator circuit fuse mounted next to the isolation switch.

26. Reinstall any parts removed during the repair process.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 279. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-130) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 279 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
