Removing and Installing Complete Front Axle


Removing and installing complete front axle (with spring strut shock absorber)
Disconnect battery, refer to Starting and Charging
Suspend engine in installation position with special tool.
Described in:
Removing oil sump.
Remove left or right brake disc, refer to Brakes and Traction Control.
Disconnect plug connection for brake lining wear indicator and left or right ABS impulse sensors.
Unscrew and remove splash guard.
Unfasten left and right engine mounts from front axle support.
Engine M57: Detach left and right mounting brackets from front axle support.
Unfasten nut.





Press track rod off pitman arm and left steering knuckle with special tool 32 1 190.

Installation:
Tapered spigot and bore free of grease. Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications.
Remove steering gear from front axle support.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.





Draw in steering gear on screw (1) until it abuts the front axle support and only tighten hand-tight. First tighten screws (2) then tighten screw (1).
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications.





Remove left or right reinforcement and heat shield.
Remove positive lead on support point.
If applicable, unfasten oil line from front axle support.

Warning! Release bolt connection of front axle support from side of car - no personnel are permitted to stand underneath the front axle! Danger of injury!

Attach workshop hoist with special tool 31 2 220 and front axle support.





Unscrew left and right bolts.

Installation:
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications.





Unscrew left and right nuts.
If applicable, disconnect plug connection for Electronic Damper Control (EDC). Lift off cap and remove from cable.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications.

Caution! Spring struts must not tilt or hang outwards - damage to ball joints and wheel bearings. Lower car jack - each spring strut must be held by a separate person.
