Replacing Front Axle Support (High)

Caution! During the installation of a new front axle support, the pitman arm can be adjusted, refer to Pitman Arm.

After assembly, perform alignment check of front axle and adjust, refer to Alignment. Alignment
Unscrew and remove splash guard.
Secure engine in installation position with special tool and release engine mounts on left and right on engine support arm from above, refer to Engine.
Remove left and right wheels.
Unfasten nut.





Press off track rod on pitman arm with special tool 32 1 190.

Installation:
Tapered spigot and bore free of grease; replace self-locking nut. Brace on hexagon socket if necessary.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications. Specifications
Remove idler arm

Installation:





Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications. Specifications
Remove stabilizer from push rod.





Unscrew left and right nuts. Press left and right track rod off steering knuckle with special tool 31 2 240.

Installation:
Use washer (1). Replace self-locking nut. Brace on hexagon socket if necessary.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications. Specifications
Remove heat shield and positive cable from front axle support.
Unfasten bracket of oil cooler line (steering unit) on front axle support.
Unfasten wheel arch trim from front area of front axle support.
Remove steering gear from front axle support (lines remain connected).

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.





Draw in steering gear on screw (1) until it abuts the front axle support and only tighten hand-tight. First tighten screws (2), then tighten screw (1).
Tightening Torque, refer to Steering Specifications. Specifications
Remove left and right control arm on front axle carrier.

Installation:





Replace self-locking nuts (1).
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications. Specifications
Unscrew left and right nuts.
Unfasten stabilizer mount on front axle support.





Remove screw (1) and turn steering onto lock if necessary.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications. Specifications
Attach workshop hoist with special tool 31 2 220 and front axle support.





Unscrew left and right bolts.
Remove front axle support.

Installation:
Front screw M 12 X 107.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications. Specifications
Damaged thread, refer to Notes at Service Precautions. Service Precautions
Remove all parts (engine mount, sheet metal components etc.) and fit to new front axle support.
