Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
Preliminary
Remove engine.
Remove both cylinder heads.
- Remove alternator
- Remove vibration damper
- Remove water pump
- Remove lower oil sump section
- Remove oil circuit changeover valves, refer to Engine Lubrication, Service and Repair.
- Remove oil pump
- Remove upper oil sump section
Remove lower timing case cover, refer to Timing Cover.
Removal
Removal of timing chain is described separately from installation.
Open plastic straps (1).
Remove timing chain.
If necessary, remove guide, reversing and tensioning rails, check and replace.
If necessary, remove tensioning rail:
Release retaining screw on tensioning rail.
Remove tensioning rail with oil guide.
If necessary, remove guide rail:
Using a small screwdriver, carefully push back retaining lug on guide rail and detach guide rail.
If necessary, remove reversing rail:
Release retaining screws (1 and 2) on reversing rail and remove reversing rail.
Installation
Installation of timing chain is described separately from removal.
Note: There is a small bore in the throttle ring (1).
Check throttle ring (1), replace if necessary.
1. Insert throttle ring (1) in reversing rail
2. Replace O-ring (2) and insert in reversing rail
3. Replace O-ring (3)
Coat O-ring (3) with oil as lubricant.
Note: Screws (1) with M7 thread.
Screws (2) with M6 thread.
Install reversing rail, insert screws (1 and 2) and tighten down.
Tightening Torque for screws (1 and 2), refer to Engine, Specifications.
Slide guide rail over guide pin until retaining lug can be heard to snap into place on lower guide pin.
Replace O-ring (1) and coat with oil as lubricant.
Install oil guide for bow cover in the pivot rail.
Insert screw of tensioning rail and tighten down.
Insert timing chain over crankshaft sprocket wheel and reversing rail.
Align timing chain to guide rail.
Press bow cover against the timing chain. Secure tensioning rail and timing chain with a plastic strap (1).
Remove lower timing case cover, refer to Timing Cover.
- Install upper oil sump section
- Install oil pump
- Install oil circuit changeover valves, refer to Engine Lubrication, Service and Repair.
- Install lower oil sump section
- Install water pump
- Install vibration damper
- Install alternator
Assemble engine.
