Timing Case Cover Lower
Remove engine.
Remove both cylinder heads.
- Remove alternator
- Remove vibration damper
- Remove water pump
- Remove lower oil sump section
- Remove oil circuit changeover valves, refer to Engine Lubrication, Service and Repair.
- Remove oil pump
- Remove upper oil sump section
Secure tensioning rail and timing chain with a plastic strap (1).
Note: The cable (2) is held in place by a cable clamp and additionally secured by a cable tie.
Open cable tie and cable clamp and feed out cable (2).
Disconnect oil return line.
Note: The cable is held in place by a cable clamp and additionally secured by a cable tie to the bracket (1).
Remove lower timing case cover.
Installation:
Clean and remove grease from sealing surfaces of the engine block.
Check dowel sleeves (1) for damage and correct installation position
Replace seals (2 and 3).
Apply thin coat of Drei Bond 1209 (or equivalent) to front and back edges of seals.
Installation:
Fit timing-chain cover. Install holder (1).
Insert all screws and initially tighten to approx. 5 Nm.
Firmly tighten all screws in alternate sequence.
Tightening Torque, refer to Engine, Specifications.
Caution: Once all screws have been tightened down, retighten them in a second operation.
Note: The cable is held in place in the cable clamp and additionally secure( by a cable tie to the bracket (1). Check cable clamp and cable tie, replace if necessary.
Connect oil return line.
Note: Insert cable (2) into cable clamp, close cable clamp and additionally secure with a cable tie to oil return line.
Lay cable (2) so that it cannot touch vibration damper later.
Tensioning rail and timing chain remain secured with a plastic strap (1).
Replace radial seal in lower timing case cover, refer to Front Crankshaft Seal.
Assemble engine.
