SUBJECT:
M5 Check Engine Light Illuminated

MODEL:
E39 M5 produced up to 2/2000

Situation:
The following situations may be encountered:

* The OBD 02 readiness codes will not set in the ECM/DME

Customer complains that the check engine light is illuminated and/or the engine temperature gauge goes to "full hot" after starting the engine. The following fault codes may be stored in the DME:

* FC 232: "Function Check TEV" (The following fault codes may also be stored: FC 174/175: "Fuel System Diagnosis 1 or 2: FC 92/93: O2 Sensor post Cat. Bank1 or Bank2 Voltage Monitoring.

* FC 105: "Engine Temperature Plausibility". The temperature gauge may go to "full hot" when this fault is set in the ECMIDME. Cycling the key will "rese the temperature gauge to normal operation.

Cause:
DME calibration.

Affected Vehicles:
This campaign involves E39 M5s built between 9/99 - 2/00.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.





The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Correction:
Reprogram the DME with CD 21.0 or higher.

Procedure:

1. Check the DME identification screen on the DIS/MoDic.

2. If the basic control unit and the programmed control unit number match the following:

the DME has already been reprogrammed and no further programming is required. If these numbers are not listed, reprogram the DME.

1. Prior to reprogramming, it will be necessary to remove fuse 31 (DSC module). If fuse 31 is not removed, difficulty programming the DME may be encountered.

2. Reprogram the DME with CD 21.0.

3. After programming, check for the correct basic and programmed control unit

This campaign has been assigned code number 276 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-130) and:





a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 276 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar a shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
