SUBJECT:
Service Action to Check and Correct Trunk Lock Wiring

MODEL:
E39 (5 Series) Vehicles produced August 1999

Situation:
A possibility exists that a wire in the trunk lock connector has been connected incorrectly. In such cases, the trunk lid cannot be locked by turning the trunk lock key to the horizontal (Valet) position.

Affected Vehicles:
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

1. With the vehicle unlocked and the doors and trunk closed, turn the key to the horizontal (Valet) position in the trunk lock, and withdraw it from this position.

If the trunk locks, no further action are necessary.

If the trunk remains unlocked, continue with step 2. Below.

2. Remove the lower trunk trim (refer to Repair Instructions 51 49 005).

3. Locate trunk lock connector, and unplug connector.

4. Using a thin flat blade screwdriver on the lock-side connector, carefully slide off the connector cover.

5. Remove the brown/yellow wire from the # 3 position, and reinstall it in the # 2 position.

6. Reinstall the connector cover, and reconnect the connector to the vehicle harness connector.

7. Reinstall the trim panel removed in step 2

8. Carry out a functional check as described in step 1.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 257. After the vehicle has been checked and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-120) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 257 printed on the label and,

c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:
Covered under the terms of the BMW new car limited warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through campaign entry.
