Removing and installing complete steering column
Disconnect ground lead from battery.
Removing steering wheel, refer to Steering Wheel.
Removing lower trim section from instrument panel.
Remove clamping bolt.
Pull steering spindle downwards out of spline in upper steering spindle.
Installation note:
Screw must locate in retaining groove of upper steering spindle. Note installation location, refer to Steering Shaft. Service and Repair
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque: 19 Nm.
compact:
Unscrew bolts.
Take off collar (1).
If necessary, remove cable for interlock. Scope of work is contained in operation for Steering Column Lock. Service and Repair
Installation note:
Check position of collar (1) relative to snap ring (2).
Recess in collar locks snap ring.
Unlock bayonet by turning counterclockwise.
Disconnect all wires leading to steering column at plug in connections.
Installation note:
Bayonet must be heard to lock.
Installation sequence:
1. Bayonet
2. Rubber ring
3. Joint socket
4. Ball joint, if necessary with Teflon ring
Airbag:
Unscrew bolt to dashboard carrier.
Installation note:
1. Nut
2. Spacer bush (not fitted to US models)
3. Washer
4. Screw (US models: 2 screws M8X22 Z1)
Unfasten shear-off screws (1) (e.g. use chisel on screw taper and unfasten screw with hammer or mill off screw taper) and remove steering column.
Installation note:
1. Shear-off screw
2. Steering column
3. Spacer
4. Sleeve
5. Dashboard carrier
Pull steering column firmly home towards interior and tighten down shear-off screws until they shear.
