Technical Service

SUBJECT
Engine No Longer Starts After EWS 4.3 Installation

MODEL
E46 (3 Series) Vehicles produced before 09/2000

SITUATION
The vehicle no longer starts following replacement of the EWS 3 (Electronic immobilizer) control module with an EWS 4 control module as specified in the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalog).

CAUSE
EWS 3 control units with HW 03 (part numbers: 61 35 4 100 187 and 61 35 4 100 188) were installed in the E46 up to 09/1999. With the introduction of EWS 4 (4.3), the terminal 50 pin assignments changed, which results in the no start condition.

PROCEDURE
If an EWS 3 (HW03) control unit is replaced with an EWS 4 (4.3) control unit (part numbers: 61 35 6 988 104 or 61 35 9 127 086), change the terminal 50 input on the EWS control unit connector (X1659) from pin 3 to pin 2. Refer to Repair Instructions 61 35 910 (Removing and installing/replacing control unit of electronic immobilizer) for information on how to disassemble the connector. Note: The plug type is Elo Power.
