SUBJECT
Door Edge Protection Seal Rubs on Door Panel

MODEL
E46 coupe

SITUATION
The door edge protection seal can work loose on the B pillar, especially if something is dragged across the seal when entering or exiting the rear seat. Once the seal starts to ride up on the pinch weld that it mounts on, the inner door panel can catch the seal and pull it off even farther as the door opens and closes. Eventually, the seal can be worn through.

Attempting to push the seal back in place frequently fails to provide adequate clearance between the door panel and the seal, giving the impression that the door panel has moved.

PROCEDURE
If the seal is only pulled loose, and is not otherwise damaged, the edge protection seal can be reinstalled.

Pull the seal off the pinch weld in the area illustrated. Remove any adhesive tape remaining on the body or inside the seal, and clean both sides of the pinch weld with Wurth Clean-Solve (article number 08909381) or 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner (part number 08984) and allow to dry.

Apply W rth Rubber Glue (article number 0890100015) to a 15 mm wide strip on both sides of the pinch weld in the area indicated by the shading in the illustration, and allow to dry for approximately 20 minutes. Do not apply the adhesive to the seal.

Install the seal in proper position, and check for adequate clearance to the inner door panel.

Allow to dry for approximately 1 hour at room temperature.

If the seal has been damaged, it should be replaced. When installing the new seal, use the above procedure to ensure that the new seal stays in place.
