SUBJECT
Trunk Lid Adjustment
MODEL
E46 coupe and convertible
SITUATION
Some owners of E46 two door models may encounter a problem with the trunk lid over-traveling when the lid is shut, allowing the lid to contact the rear cross panel.
CAUSE
Because of settling of the seal and stop bumpers, the lid on cars built prior to 2/02 can eventually exhibit this problem.
CORRECTION
In case of customer complaint, check the adjustment of the trunk lid.
The lid should line up with the quarter panels at the rear top corners, and there should be a 6 mm + 1 mm gap between the lid and the rear cross panel.
The stop bumpers should contact the pads (1) on the body with enough force to prevent the lid from over-traveling when closing. Adjust the stop bumpers by turning as necessary to prevent the lid from over traveling when closing. However, the stop bumpers should not be adjusted too far making the lid hard to close.
If the paint on the lid or rear cross panel has been damaged, touch up with a paint stick.
