1.Transmission Repair & Replacement Information

[NEW] Diagnosing symptoms involving automatic transmissions and determining when a replacement is appropriate, are areas where specialized assistance is often needed. For those reasons, technical experts on the GM and ZF automatic transmissions are available by contacting the BMW Technical Hotline/Drivetrain via PuMA. Depending on the vehicle and location, the appropriate expert will ask questions and provide guidance on repair issues. Their primary task is to provide you with the technical assistance you may need to properly diagnose a transmission problem and perform the correct repair.

To get a thorough understanding of automatic transmission issues, a GM or ZF TECHNICAL SPECIALIST must be contacted via PuMA case, whenever a vehicle with an automatic transmission is brought into the service area, with a transmission related concern.

[NEW] IF THERE ISN'T A SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN PUBLISHED, WHICH ADDRESSES THE SPECIFIC CONCERN, DO NOT MAKE ANY REPAIRS TO ANY 5 SPEED OR A 6 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PRIOR TO CONTACTING A GM OR ZF TECHNICAL SPECIALIST. Begin by verifying the customer complaint, printing out the fault codes, and perform basic troubleshooting to obtain the required information to submit the PuMA case.

Once a field fix is available, the information will be published via a Service Bulletin.

[NEW] The repair procedures and recommendations that the GM and ZF experts provide to you through the PuMA case are stored in the Hotline PuMA contact system. When BMW NA pays all or a portion of an automatic transmission replacement or repair, in all Warranty, Goodwill, or Certified Pre-Owned claims, the PuMA case will be reviewed by the Warranty Department to verify that the inquiry and repair instructions match the claim submitted.

[NEW] When creating a PuMA case regarding any automatic transmission complaint, please ensure that it contains all of the following information:

- [NEW] A full description of the complaint and whether or not the complaint has been verified.
- [NEW] A detailed description of the operating conditions, environment, road conditions, anything related to the complaint or conditions under which it can be duplicated. The details must be sufficient to ensure that the person reading your case will be able to understand the situation and/or duplicate it if necessary.
- [NEW] Identify any work performed during each service visit for the same complaint.
- [NEW] Results of tests performed, i.e. measurement of wiring harness resistance values, etc. Always provide specific readings and observations including "CC messages, fault warning displays, range displays, modifications to the vehicle and verification of approved wheel and tire combinations. Statements such as "in spec" are not adequate.
- [NEW] Include "GM" or "ZF" in the subject line and the transmission serial number in the "Work Performed" field of your case. Also include the transmission fluid level and condition. If the problem concerns shift characteristics, include the specific shift (i.e. 1-2, 2-1or 3-2), and vehicle speed in which the complaint can be duplicated.
- [NEW] Where fault codes are stored, include the name of the module concerned in "problem description" and the actual fault codes in the "fault code" box.

- [NEW] In order to aid the Technical Hotline Specialist in diagnosis, your diagnostic tester must have transmitted FASTA data indicating that all relevant test modules have been completed.
- For more information in regards to creating and submitting PuMA cases to the BMW Technical Hotline, refer to SI B00 04 02.
- We welcome any feedback or comments on the effectiveness of this program and the resolution of customer problems.

[NEW] ALL GM5 (5L40E), GM6 (6L45R) transmissions, ALL ZF automatic transmissions (including Valueline 4 speeds under warranty), as well as Mechatronic modules for 6-speed ZF transmissions
- replaced without prior authorization from the Technical Hotline will result in the Warranty, Goodwill or Certified Pre-Owned claim being rejected! This also pertains to "over the counter" part warranty.

[NEW] We recommend that all BMW centers to make use of these valuable resources, including "customer pay" situations PRIOR to any repairs being made.

[NEW] Refer to section 2 & 3 for information on contacting the appropriate Technical Liaison.
