PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE, REPAIRS, OR PRIOR TO DELIVERY.

SUBJECT:
5HP19 ZF Transmission Selector Switch Replacement

MODEL:
E46 with M54 and 5HP19 produced 8/00 - 9/00

SITUATION:
A customer may complain that the vehicle will not "up-shift", transmission is in "fail-safe", or engine will not crank/start. FC 60 and or FC114 is stored in the TCM

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
This Service Action involves E46 vehicles with M54 engines which were produced from 8/00 to 9/00.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.





The Chassis Number Ranges as shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CAUSE:
Transmission selector switch

CORRECTION:
Caution!
Transmission and exhaust system may be extremely hot. Use care when performing this procedure.

To replace the selector switch (located on the driver's side of the transmission case):





1. The selector switch (1) is located on the driver's side of the transmission.

2. Refer to repair instruction 24 10 105 for the switch removal procedure.





3. Mark the old switch as shown (1).

4. Note the position of the two harness clips (3). Remove these clips and transfer them to the new switch (2) harness in the same location.





5. Transfer the locking collar / bracket (as one piece) to the new switch connector.

6. Install the new switch.





7. Route the switch harness (1) exactly as shown. The harness must be routed under the edge of the switch, above the "bosses" (arrows) of the transmission case.

8. Refer to repair instruction 24 10 105 for bolt torque specifications and adjustment procedure.

9. Check the operation of the selector switch: turn on the ignition, move the trans. shifter lever through all gear positions and "sport". Ensure the gear indicator in the instrument cluster corresponds with the shifter position.

10. Clear all faults in the EGS/DME

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 288 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD92-155) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 288 printed on the label and,





c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
