PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
E46 DMTL FC 142 Stored in the DME

MODEL:
E46 with M54B30

SITUATION:
The customer complains that the check engine lamp is illuminated. FC 142 (DMTL pump) is stored in the DME, even though no leaks exist in the EVAP system.

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
This Service Action involves E46 vehicles with M54 engines which were produced from 1/2000 to 8/2000.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges as shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Replace the DMTL pump on all affected vehicles.

PROCEDURE

1. Check the DMTL pump for a "green dot" (as illustrated below) or part number only - DO NOT replace the pump if the "green dot" is present, or p/n 16 13 6 756 440 has been installed. Claim warranty work package 1.

2. Refer to repair instruction 16 12 010 to remove the carbon canister (with DMTL).

3. Refer to repair instruction 16 13 015 to remove/replace the DMTL pump.

When using p/n 16 13 1 184 849 always verify that a "green dot" (1) is marked below the electrical connector(2).

Do not use pin 16 13 1 184 849 if a "green dot" is not applied (as shown).

Important:
P/N 16 13 1 184 849 will be superceded by P/N 16 13 6 756 440 (revised part without green dot).

Always perform the DMTL test module using the DIS/MoDiC, after the repair has been completed.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 286. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-155) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 286 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
