This Service Information bulletins supersedes S.I. 54 07 00 dated September 2000.

SUBJECT:
Sunroof Inoperative at Times

MODEL:
E38 (7 Series) Vehicles from 12/98 to 8/00
E46 (3 Series) Vehicles from 12/98 to 8/00

Situation:
At times, the sunroof does not respond correctly to the switch input. Typically, a closed sunroof does not move when the switch input is to "open", but "tilts" when the switch input is "close". After moving to the "tilt" position, normal sunroof function is then restored.

NOTE:
This situation is not related to the complaint that the anti-trap activates when closing the roof.

Cause:
Loss of initialization caused by a software error in sunroof module (SHD) SW 3.1.

Correction:
On a customer complaint basis only, install SHD module with earlier version software SW2.7. (Refer to work instructions 67 61 510 (E38) or 67 61 515 (E46)).

Note:
SHD with 5W2.7 was reintroduced into series production 09/00.
