SUBJECT:
In-Dash CD43 Radio - Intermittently CD Will Not Eject

MODEL :
E46 (3 series) with CD-43 (in-dash CD) radio

SITUATION:
CD intermittently will not eject from radio.

CAUSE:

1. Excessive pressure on the CD drive slot from the wood trim panel located above the radio.

2. CD drive opening too narrow to allow ejection of thicker (or warped) CD's. As a result, CD is being retracted back into the CD-drive.

CORRECTION:
On a customer complaint basis only, and after verifying that the condition actually exists modify the wood trim finisher panel, and/or the CD drive opening of the CD43 radio according to the procedure.

NOTE:
If a CD is permanently jammed in the CD43 radio (unit does not eject when the "Eject" button is repeatedly pressed, or does not accept new CD's), performing the repair listed below will not correct the problem.

1. Visually inspect the shape of the radio CD drive slot. If the upper portion of the CD drive is slightly concave, that indicates the excessive downward pressure from the wood trim panel.

2. Remove the wood trim panel located above the CD43 radio. For removal procedure, follow the Repair instruction 51 16 221

3. Make sure that the wood trim panel is not deflected (concaved) in its center part (inward deflection will apply additional force towards radio CD drive).

If necessary, the original (straight) shape of the wood trim can be restored by bending the piece using light to moderate force.

4. Inspect, and if necessary remove any excessive flashing from the center locating slot on the back of the wood finisher panel.

5. Reinstall the wood trim panel, and visually inspect the shape of the upper edge of CD drive (as shown on the illustration).

6. Check the operation of the CD player portion of the radio. If there is still a problem (CD intermittently does not eject), continue with the next step of the procedure.

7. Remove CD43 radio. For removal procedure, follow the Repair Instruction 65 11 03.

8. Using a flat-tipped screwdriver, remove the top cover (1) of the radio chassis carefully. Pry the cover up at the points indicated on the illustration.

9. Using light force, create an upward bow in the cover, by bending it slightly in the middle (the radio labels must be located on the convex side of the cover).

10. Radio cover will retain the slightly convex shape.

11. Install the modified cover, first by sliding the leading edge of the cover into the slot in the radio's faceplate.

The modified edge (convex shape) will exert an upward pressure on the CD drive opening, increasing its vertical dimension.

12. Complete the installation, by pressing the cover into the radio chassis. Make sure, that the cover is positioned properly in reference to the locating tabs (as indicated on the illustration).

13. Install radio in the vehicle.

14. Perform functional check of CD changer portion of the radio.

Important:
Due to dimensional sensitivity of the loading mechanism of the CD43 unit, customers should be advised that only standard sized CD's (without additional labels not shown) should be used.
