Double Pivot Front Suspension

Double Pivot Front Suspension

The Double Pivot front suspension system was developed by BMW engineers in the late 1970s. The double pivot design has evolved and improved over the years.

The following vehicles have utilized or are currently equipped with various versions of the double pivot design:
- E34, E32, E31, E38 and E39. The double pivot suspension system consists of:

The unique design provides an imaginary pivot point at the intersection of the suspension arm axis. The principal advantages of this system are:
- The choice of suspension geometry and steering roll radius are free over a wide range of steering position.
- The steering roll radius can be selected positive or negative. Through long comprehensive testing, BMW engineers choose the slightly positive roll radius. This provides improved handling characteristics when the braking of the car does not provide equal stopping friction due to uneven braking or road conditions.
- Configuration of the suspension system allows ample space for large brake components.

- Reduces front end dive tendencies during hard braking. This benefit provides the use of softer springs without sacrificing the BMW handling characteristics.
- Reduced body roll in cornering.
- Improved straight line stability at high speeds.
- Responsive return to a straight ahead neutral position when coming out of turns.
