SUBJECT
Rear Window Opens Unexpectedly
MODEL
M6 sport wagon. Vehicles produced February 2000 until May 2002.
SITUATION
The rear window intermittently opens unexpectedly when the vehicle is stationary. In this case, a warning light will illuminate on the instrument cluster when the ignition is on. The situation will not occur if the vehicle is locked.
CAUSE
The situation may be caused by one or more of the following components:
^ Rear window button with micro switch.
^ Rear window.
^ Suppressor filter.
^ General module.
CORRECTION
In case of customer complaint, check that customer error can be ruled out (e.g. inadvertent operation of the remote control). Then proceed as follows:
Remove the rear spoiler (Refer to work instruction 51 71 412).
1. Disconnect the single wire connector X10289 (2) under the roof spoiler.
2. Using a Fluke 83 Multimeter or similar, measure the resistance between the male terminal (2) (black wire), and the ground strap (1) on the tailgate hinge.
Case 1: Resistance is less than 1 mega-ohm
Disconnect the rear window button (without pressing the button). Measure the resistance again.
a. If the resistance value is greater than 1 mega-ohm, replace the rear window button.
b. If the resistance value is less than 1 mega-ohm, replace the rear window and the general module.
Case 2: Resistance is greater than 1 mega-ohm:
Press the rear window button and measure the resistance.
a. If the resistance is greater than 100 ohms while the switch is pressed, replace the rear window button.
b. If the resistance value is less than 100 ohms while the switch is pressed, release the rear window switch and measure the resistance again.
If the resistance value is less than 1 mega-ohm while the switch is not pressed, replace the rear window button.
If the resistance is greater than 1 mega-ohm while the switch is not pressed, replace the suppressor filter and the general module.
[NEW] Helpful hint:
The suppressor filter is located above the headliner, centered on the roof (about 6" from the rear tailgate opening).
