SUBJECT:
Recall Campaign 00V-383 - Checking Wheels for Damage

MODEL:
E46

Situation:
During the tire mounting process at the assembly plant, some wheels may have encountered damage to the inner rim flange caused by the mounting machine. In extreme cases, this damage could lead to sudden air loss from the tire.

Please note the precautions provided to the driver in the draft of the customer letter. The customer is instructed to bring his/her affected vehicle into a BMW center immediately; if a customer feels uncomfortable driving the vehicle as a result of this notification, then the vehicle should be towed to a BMW center. If a customer calls you for assistance, please make arrangements to have the vehicle towed in through Roadside Assistance. (call 1-800-332-4269)

Affected Vehicles:
This Recall Campaign involves Regensburg produced E46 vehicles which were produced from September 14, 2000 through October 7, 2000.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Parts Information:

The list gives the part numbers for each style wheel, and the tire valves that will be required if damaged wheels are found.

Procedure:
Check the spare tire as described below. If no damage is found on the spare, raise the car on a lift and inspect the inner face of the rim flanges of the road wheels.

Check the inner rim flange for evidence of indentation type damage. It may be easier to check by running your fingertips over the inner rim face and feeling for the marks.

Affected wheels will have two indentations spaced 60 mm or 2-3/8" apart on at least one point of the rim.

Similar marks may be found at approximately 90 intervals around the rim, as indicated by arrows.

Disregard random scratches or dings to the rim that do not have a corresponding mark 60 mm away.

If no damage is found, proceed to Label Instructions.

If one or more wheels are found to have the described damage, replace all five wheels.

Wheel weights used must be claimed under sublet.

If wheel replacement is necessary, and the required wheels are not on hand, the customer should be provided with a service loaner. If all loaners are in use BMW NA will reimburse for actual invoiced rental, up to a maximum of $49.00 per day (plus tax) for a maximum of three days. The BMW agreement with Enterprise Rent-A-Car should be utilized whenever possible to provide the best service to the customer.

Label Instruction:
Any rental charges must be entered along with the sublet for wheel weights.

This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 289. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-155) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 289 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:

Reimbursement for this Recall will be via Campaign Entry.

Any required towing should be arranged through Roadside Assistance. Towing reimbursement through Warranty should not be necessary.
