Single Pivot Spring Strut Front Suspension

The single pivot design is found only on 3 series (E30 & E36) BMW vehicles. This system lends itself to the smaller cars due to it's lightweight, compact design. Additional favorable traits of this type off suspension are:
- Precise pivoting of the lower control arm.
- Good anti-dive qualities
- Good self centering qualities
- Small positive steering offset

The single pivot spring front suspension consists of:







The lower control arm pivots on an integral central joint that is attached to the front axle beam.
At the rear, the arm is attached to the subframe of the car by a pliable rubber bushing which reduces road noise and vibration into the interior of the car.
The front end of the arm is connected to the wheel hub and lower end of the strut assembly. The steering rack is positioned forward of the front axle carrier.
