SUBJECT:
E39 - BMW Accessory Navigation System Speed Input Signal
MODEL:
E39, 5 series vehicles manufactured after 06/99
Situation:
During the installation of the BMW Accessory Navigation System into E39 vehicles, the speed signal input (male pin # 3 in the connector X322) cannot be found.
Cause:
Since July of 1999 production, the separate speed signal (Speed-A) output harness has been eliminated from series production. The speed information is now made available to the connected control modules in the form of a telegram via the body bus (K-bus). By design, the Accessory Navigation System is not capable to extract speed signal information from the K-Bus.
Correction:
When installing the BMW Accessory Navigation System into E39 vehicles manufactured after 06/99, the Speed-A signal wire has to be fitted between the instrument cluster (pin # 3 of the 18-pin connector X10113 for the IKE, or pin # of the 26-pin connector X11176 for the Kombi) and pin number 3 of the X322 connector (located in the rear left corner of the trunk).
Such a modification is not covered by the BMW New Car Limited Warranty.
Procedure:
For the Speed-A signal adapter harness use one of the wires from the Airbag Repair Cable (P/N 61 12 8 386 368) and the male socket connector P/N 61 13 0 007 452.
1. Cut through the single wire from the Airbag Repair Harness, at the length of 12 feet, starting from the female Siemens connector.
2. Strip off insulation at the end of the cut wire (stripped length 4.5 mm), and crimp the male socket connector P/N 61 13 0 007 452. Use the appropriate crimping tool - e.g. pliers with die block P/N 61 9 041 found in the Electric Repair Kit IV P/N 61 9 020.
3. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to Repair Manual RA 62 11 200.
Find connector (1):
-- X10113 (18-pin natural) on vehicles with IKE, or
-- X11176 (26-pin natural) on vehicles with low cluster
4. Disassemble the connector by removing the locking tab (sliding it upwards), and then removing the housing assembly as shown on the illustration.
5. Insert female Siemens connector of the adapter harness into the slot number:
-- 3 of connector X10113 (IKE), or
-- 14 of connector X11176 (Kombi).
6. Route the Speed-A signal adapter harness along the Accessory Navigation Harness A, as shown on the illustration (for routing details refer to Accessory Navigation Installation Instruction P/N 01 21 9 790 598)
7. Route the adapter wire to the right, towards the air vent pipe, and then down the rear center of the dash, behind the radio-mounting bracket (2).
8. Route the speed signal adapter wire (4) down and back toward the rear compartment going through the center console following the route of harnesses B3 and B4. Then continue over the transmission tunnel, to the rear seat area and finally out to the trunk going through the grommet.
9. Route the speed signal adapter wire with harness branches A9, B3, and B4 under the carpet, from the back of the center console to the top LH edge of the transmission tunnel. Then route cables along the bottom edge of the rear seat, finally under the rear seat towards the trunk.
10. Route the harness into the trunk through the grommet (1), towards connector X322.
11. Locate connector X322 (A) that is mounted behind the radio amplifier bracket, in the left trunk corner. Detach the connector from the bracket and disassemble connector's housing.
12. Insert the male pin socket (2) from the speed signal adapter harness into slot number 3 of connector X322 (1).
13. Proceed with the other installation steps for BMW Accessory Navigation System.
