SUBJECT
GM5 - 5L40E Harsh Shift: E46xi, E39, E36/7 Z3 with M54

MODEL
E46 325xiA, 33OxiA, 325xiA sport wagon, 325iA sport wagon with M54 from 08/00 up to 12/00
E39 525iA, 530iA, 525iA sport wagon with M54 from 09/00 up to 12/00
E36 Z3 roadster 2.5/3.0, coupe 3.0 with M54 from 06/00 up to 12/00

SITUATION
Customer may complain of the following:

- Firm 1-2/2-3/3-4 upshift when trans is cold with small throttle input on all vehicles with M54B30

- Firm 5-2/5-3/4-2/4-3 downshift on all vehicles with M54B30

- Firm 2-3 "lift foot" upshift shift on all vehicle with the M54B25

- Noticeable TCC (converter lock-up clutch) application at approximately 40 mph on E39 and E46xi with M54B30

CAUSE
TCM calibration (EGS)

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram the TCM/EGS with CD29.0 (P29.0).

PROCEDURE

1. Read the TCM/EGS ID page and note the "Software Index" and "Amendment Index".

2. If the displayed "Software Index" is 64, and the displayed "Amendment Index" is 40, 60, 70, 80, 86 or 90, then reprogram the TCM with CD29.0 or higher.





3. After programming with CD 29.0, the "Software" and "Amendment" index will be displayed on the ID page as shown.
