Procedures

E39, 5 Series vehicles:

1. Remove front bumper. For removal/installation instructions refer to RA 51 11 000 (which can be found in the BMW Technical Information System - TIS).

2. Remove air-guiding ducts in front of radiator.

3. Disconnect the plug from the electric auxiliary fan/shroud assembly, and remove the fan assembly.

4. Check the BMW part number on the fan/shroud assembly. The part number is located on the lower left section on the face of the fan shroud (molded next to the BMW logo, or on the label printed next to the logo).

If the part number is: 64 54 6 919 057, then continue with step 5.

If the part number differs from that listed, then the fan assembly must be replaced (go to step 7).





5. Turn the fan assembly over and locate the manufacturing label on the fan motor housing (as shown on the illustration).

6. Check the three digits after the "A1" code on the label:

If the numbers are: 142 or higher, then NO further action is required. Reinstall all previously removed components.

If the numbers are 141 or lower, then the fan must be replaced (continue with step 7).

7. Replace the auxiliary fan with the correct part (PN 64 54 6 919 057), reinstall all previously removed components.

E53, X5 vehicles:

1. Remove the auxiliary fan. For removal/installation instructions refer to RA 17 40 000 ("Removing and refitting/replacing complete auxiliary fan M62, M54"), which can be found in the BMW Technical Information System - 115.

2. Check the BMW part number on the fan/shroud assembly. The part number is located on the lower left section on the face of the fan shroud (molded next to the BMW logo, or on the label printed next to the logo).

If the part number is: 64 54 6 919 051, then continue with step 3.

If the part number differs from that listed, then the fan assembly must be replaced (go to step 5).





3. Turn the fan assembly over and locate the manufacturing label on the fan motor housing (as shown on the illustration).

4. Check the three digits after the "A1" code on the label:

If the numbers are: 146 or higher, then NO further action is required. Reinstall all previously removed components.

If the numbers are 145 or lower, then the fan must be replaced (continue with step 5).

5. Replace the auxiliary fan with the correct parts (PN 64 54 6 919 051), reinstall all previously removed components.
