PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

SUBJECT
Recall Campaign 01V-352 Checking Tires

MODEL
E39 5 Series

SITUATION
This campaign is limited to cars in the affected production range with standard (non-sport) suspension and equipped with Continental "ContiTouringContact CH95" tires in the size 225/55R16 95H. Other tire brands, models, and sizes may be installed on some of the affected vehicles and are not involved in this campaign.

During the tire mounting process in the tire supplier's plant, the outer sidewall surface of some of the affected tires may have been cut by a sharp edge on an item of tire handling equipment. Such a cut would be approximately 1-2" long, located radially at the outer edge near the tread.

In such a case, operation of the vehicle over a long period of time could lead to a reduction in inflation pressure. Continued driving with low inflation pressure in the tire could ultimately result in damage to the tire, which could adversely affect vehicle handling and control, and could in some cases result in a vehicle crash.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves 5 series vehicles which were produced from September 28 through October 24, 2001.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

PROCEDURE

Check to see if the vehicle has Continental Conti Touring Contact tires in size 225/55 R 16 95H. If the vehicle had any other tires installed, no further checking is required.

If the vehicle has Continental Conti Touring Contact tires in size 225/55 R 16 95H, visually check the outer sidewalls of all five tires for any radial cuts in the rubber. Tires with the damage can have a cut starting at the edge of the tread which runs in toward the rim for a distance of (2.5-5 cm).
