Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair
Remove wheel.
Remove final drive, refer to Differential, Service and Repair.
Vehicle with coil springs:
Tension coil spring, refer to Steering and Suspension.
Leave tensioned coil spring at rear on vehicle.
Vehicle with air suspension:
Pull fuse of air supply system.
This prevents unintentional system control.
Release pipes on distributor block in order to reduce system pressure. The vehicle stands low.
Tightening torque, refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints, Specifications.
Release collar nut (1).
Tightening torque, refer to Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints, Specifications.
Installation:
Replace collar nut.
Secure collar nut by peening at flat area of shaft.
Press output shaft with special tool 33 2 111 / 116 / 117 out of rear axle shaft.
Installation:
Apply a light coat of oil to shaft splines.
Draw in output shaft with special tool 33 2 115 / 116 / 118.
Raise wheel carrier with workshop hoist and remove output shaft.
If necessary, remove air tank.
