SUBJECT:
Navigation "Wide" Screen On-Board Monitor Opens by Itself
MODEL:
E38, E39 with Nav from 09/00
SITUATION
After starting the vehicle, the screen of the on-board monitor opens and closes of by itself without pressing the eject button. This action repeats itself several times over a period of approximately 5 minutes following start-up. After that time, the on-board monitor works correctly.
CAUSE
A defective drive unit in the on-board monitor housing assembly. The root cause is currently under investigation.
CORRECTION
Until the root cause of the problem is found and corrected, it is not recommended to replace any components of the on-board monitor assembly.
In case of a persistent customer complaint, replace only the on-board monitor housing (PN 65 52 8 385 454).
PROCEDURE
The "wide" screen on-board monitor consists of two separate units: housing assembly with cassette drive, and screen with its control panel. In order to replace the board monitor housing unit:
1. Remove bezel trim of the monitor screen by gently pulling it out (start at the bottom of the screen).
2. Remove four Philips screws securing the board monitor into the dashboard. Remove board monitor assembly from the vehicle, and disconnect two Siemens connectors located at the back.
3. From the housing assembly top cover, remove four Philips screws. Pry-up and remove the cover.
4. Disconnect two ribbon connections between screen and the circuit board of the housing assembly (first gently pry-up the white locking tabs at the circuit board in order to release the connector).
5. Manually rotate the screen to the fully open position.
6. Remove four Philips screws located on the sides of the screen, securing screen to the rotating arms.
7. Separate screen from the housing assembly.
8. Reinstall screen into the new housing assembly in the reverse order.
