Valve: Description and Operation

CAMSHAFTS/VALVES

^ Two solid, cast iron camshafts are used for each cylinder head. The cams run in five machined bearing surfaces with numbered caps for identification. Camshaft bearing lubrication is supplied through oil distribution rails mounted on the bearing caps.

^ The camshafts are also marked for identification and incorporate square machined blocks for timing the cams during installation. The existing M60 camshaft timing jigs (P/N 90 88 6 112 440) are also used on the M62.

Make sure the kit is upgraded with the revised exhaust cam jigs (red color id tags). For more information reference Service Information bulletin 04 02 94 (3950).

^ The intake and exhaust valves are arranged in a V pattern. The valves are the same as those used in the M60. However the M62 springs, retainers and HVA tappets are new.

^ Single, conical shaped valve springs with smaller retainers and smaller tappets are used which reduces the reciprocating valve mass. This measure reduces engine noise and increases overall fuel efficiency.

^ A total weight savings of 126 grams per cylinder is achieved by using the new design springs and retainers (same design as on the M52 engine).
