Instrument Cluster - Check Control (CC)
Instrument Cluster - Check Control
All BMW instrument clusters are all electronically controlled. Depending on the vehicle, the processing electronics are located either in the cluster or in a separate control module.
- E32/E34/E36 - Processing electronics located in the cluster
- E31 - Processing electronics located in the EKM control module.
- E38/E39 - Processing electronics located in the IKE control module.
The various types of instrument clusters contain the following analog gauges.
1. Fuel Gauge
2. Speedometer
3. Tachometer
4. Fuel economy indicator (not included on the 318ti and Z3 Roadster)
5. Engine temperature Gauge
The instrument clusters are capable of a display test function. The display test illuminates the various indicators, digital displays and the analog gauges for proper function. If a certain indicator fails to illuminate during the display test it is assumed defective. Depending on the vehicle, the indicators are either replaceable bulbs or non replaceable LEDs.
E34, E32 and E38 clusters incorporate a matrix display for Check Control. Check Control is a warning system that alerts the driver of important fluid levels and lighting circuits on vehicle. Messages are posted as faults occur. Lighting circuits are monitored both on and off. Display will be posted as soon as it occurs.
Except for the 318ti and Z3 Roadster, the instrument cluster is connected to the diagnostic link allowing diagnosis through the DIS tester.
E31 Check Control display messages are posted in the MID while E36 messages are read out via the On-Board computer (BC V).
