The E39 carries over the E38's design of the BMW kidneys being integrated into the rear hinged hood. The grille openings are more rounded and blend into the up-sloping hood. The hood can be raised to a maximum angle of 90 degs. (service position) by detaching the gas tilled strut springs and inserting a drift pin through aligned holes in the hinges.

The hood is opened by first pulling the release lever inside of the vehicle and then releasing the safety catch located in the passenger's side kidney grille.
