Shift Linkage: Service and Repair

Replacing radial seal for manual shift valve shaft (A5S 440Z)

Note: After completing work, check transmission oil level and top up if necessary, refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid, Service and Repair (A5S 440Z)





Remove rear underbody protection from assemblies.
Remove left and right sides of heat shield.





Brace clamping bush (1) and loosen nut (2).

Installation:
Adjust shift lever, refer to Adjustments.





Pry out retaining plate (1) with a screwdriver and pull out cable (2).





Support transmission with special tool 00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 00 25C.





Loosen screws and unfasten approximately 10 mm. Lower transmission approximately 10 mm.





Slacken nut (1).
Remove shift lever (2).

Installation:
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.





Unfasten screws and pull position switch (1) off manual shift valve shaft.

Installation:
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.





Screw special tool 24 5 260 into radial seal and remove radial seal by tightening down the extractor sleeve.

Installation:





Press radial seal (1) with special tool 24 5 270 to limit position in the transmission case.
Pull special tool 24 5 490 off manual shift valve shaft.

Installation:





Fit special tool 24 5 490 to the manual shift valve shaft.
Coat sealing lip of new radial seal (1) with automatic transmission fluid.
Slide radial seal (1) onto manual shift valve shaft.
