Removing Cylinder Head Covers
REMOVING AND INSTALLING / SEALING BOTH CYLINDER HEAD COVERSCAUTION: Disconnecting the battery will cancel (clear) the memory of control units which have diagnostic trouble code capabilities. Be sure to interrogate all control units for possible diagnostic trouble codes prior to disconnecting the battery.
BMW anti-theft radios can be rendered useless by disconnecting the battery. Make sure you know the correct code before disconnecting the battery. See your owner's manual for more information.
- Disconnect negative battery terminal.
- Remove intake air manifolds, Removing Intake Manifold.
- Unscrew bolts. First unscrew the rubber mount then unscrew the nuts.
- Remove cylinder-head cover.
Installation Note: Replace gasket. Coat sealing edges on timing case and timing case cover with Hylomar SQ 32M. Torque bolts to:
M6 10 ± 1 Nm (7.5 ± 1 ft lb)
M7 15 ± 2 Nm (11 ± 1.5 ft lb)
Installation Note: Fit bracket (1) on front cylinder head cover for cover over left and right distributor caps.
Installation Note: Fit bracket (1) for manifold and ignition line duct on rear left and right cylinder head covers.
Installation Note: Fit bracket (1) for cover on distributor cap and fuel lines on front right cylinder head cover. Fit bracket (2) for manifold and ignition line duct.
Installation Note: Fit bracket (1) for rear right cable duct on engine wiring harness.
