Air Bag Systems: Testing and Inspection

If airbag indicator light remains constantly lit after the engine has been started (i.e. for more than 4 seconds), there is a fault in the system.
1. Remove airbag unit, [1][2]Procedures
2. Fit adapter cable 62 1 240 to airbag unit with test cable 62 1 260.
3. Re-install airbag unit, arranging test cable to lead outwards between airbag unit and steering wheel.


CAUTION!
Only perform measurements while airbag unit is installed.


A measurement may only be taken with the BMW Service Tester or DIS at room temperature.

If different equipment is used, there is a risk of activating the airbag.

4. Measure resistance of airbag unit at free ends of test cables (squib). Nominal value 1.7... 2.2 ohm.
5. If measured value is outside specified value range, replace airbag unit. If measured value is within specified value range, replace control unit.
