Stabilizer Bar: Service and Repair


Removing And Installing/Replacing Front Stabilizer (High)
Unscrew and remove splash guard.
Secure engine in installation position with special tool and unfasten left and right engine mounts at top of engine support arm, refer to Engine Specifications.
Remove left and right wheels.
Unfasten nut.





Press off track rod on pitman arm with special tool 32 1 190.

Installation:
Tapered spigot and bore free of grease; replace self-locking nut. Brace on hexagon socket if necessary.
Tightening Torque, refer to Steering Specifications.





Remove idler arm

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening Torque, refer to Steering Specifications.
Unscrew left and right nuts.





Press left and right track rod off steering knuckle with special tool 31 2240.
Installation:
Use washer (1).
Replace self-locking nut. Brace on hexagon socket if necessary.
Tightening Torque, refer to Steering Specifications.
Remove heat shield and positive cable from front axle support.
Unfasten bracket of oil cooler line (steering unit) on front axle support.
Unfasten wheel arch trim from front area of front axle support.
Remove steering gear from front axle support (lines remain connected).

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.





Draw in steering gear on screw (1) until it abuts the front axle support and only tighten hand-tight. First tighten screws (2), then tighten screw (1).
Tightening Torque, refer to Steering Specifications.
Unscrew left and right nuts.





Remove screw (1) and turn steering onto lock if necessary.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications.
Unfasten stabilizer mount on front axle support.

Installation:
Wet retaining bracket with low-surface-tension water.





Remove left and right stabilizer.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut. Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications.





Mark the installation position of the spring strut tube (1) in the swivel bearing (2) with paint - never mark with scribing tool. Marking is not required if the factory mark is still identifiable.

Version with factory marking above the swivel bearing.
Unfasten nut.





If necessary, expand the swivel bearing with special tool 31 2 200 and press downwards.

Installation:
Press swivel bearing up to stop and note the mark indicating the installation position.
Replace self-locking nut. Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications.

Caution! Only unfasten control arm on swivel bearing since otherwise a wheel alignment check is necessary.





Press control arm off swivel bearing with special tool 31 2 240.

Installation:
Tapered spigot and bore both free of grease.
Use corrugated washers.
Replace self-locking nut. Tightening Torque, if necessary brace on hex cap nut, refer to Suspension Specifications.
Attach workshop hoist with special tool 31 2 220 and front axle support.





Unscrew left and right bolts and remove front-axle carrier.

Installation:
Front screw M 12 X 107. Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension Specifications.
