Removing and Installing Complete Steering Column

Caution: After installation:
- Carry out steering angle offset for Dynamic Stability Control.
- Check for freedom of movement over entire adjustment range of steering column to adjoining components/wires.
- Carry out mechanical (lock cylinder, steering lock, Interlock) and electrical (e.g. ignition, radio etc.) function checks.





Disconnect and connect battery.
Unfasten screws.
Disconnect plug from gong and On-Board Diagnosis.
Remove instrument panel trim.





Remove steering wheel.
Remove upper section of steering column trim.
Remove lower section of steering column trim.
Take off collar (1).

Installation:
Check position of collar (1) with regard to snap ring (2).





If necessary, remove cable for Interlock from steering lock.





Unfasten screws.
Detach plug and remove stalk fixture for steering column.





Remove clamping bolt.
Press down on steering spindle.

Installation:
Clamping screw must be located in retaining groove of steering spindle.
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque:
- Universal joint/coupling to steering gear/steering spindle
- Steel Joint
- M8 10.9 24 Nm
- Aluminum Joint
- M8 10.9 28 Nm
Note: Replace Clamping Screw






Loosen shear-off screw with chisel or mill off screw head.

Installation:
Fit spacer tube.
Tighten shear-off screws until heads shear off.





Unfasten all lines leading to steering column from their respective brackets.
Release screw.
Unlock connector from ignition starter switch and remove.





Mechanical adjustment:
Unfasten screws (3).

Installation:
1 Bracket
2 Spacer
3 Bolt
4 Inner surfaces of plastic guide lightly greased
5 Washer
6 Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening torque = 8 Nm





Unfasten screws on support tube.
Remove steering column.

Installation:
1 Screw
2 Spacer tube
3 Guide bush
4 Shim
