SUBJECT E36/7 (Z3) DWA Alarm Coding Procedure
MODEL
Z3 roadster, Z3 coupe from 02/01
SITUATION
Beginning with February 2001, Z3 roadster and Z3 coupe vehicles are factory pre-wired for retrofitting with the DWA Alarm system. The DWA Alarm installation kit (containing inclination sensor, siren, and LED alarm indicator) is available under the part number: 65 60 0 139 324.
When installing the DWA Alarm system (according to installation instructions PN 01 29 0 139 325, from the "BMW Parts and Accessories - Installation Instructions CD-ROM, PN 01 21 0 029 844), the coding procedure from page number 6 of the instructions has to be disregarded. The appropriate coding data (in the path: "E36/7, Retrofit, DWA Alarm System") is currently not present in DIS/MoDiC coding software (CD 25.1, or CD 26).
CORRECTION
After installation of a DWA Alarm kit, the SA line from the vehicle's ZCS code has to be reconfigured (according to the instruction below), then the instrument cluster (Kombi) has to be recoded using the modified ZCS code, and finally the GM IV module has to be recoded using the ZCS Coding "Recoding" path. The following ("manual") procedure has to be performed, until the "E36/7, Retrofit, DWA Alarm" coding path is available (planned with the introduction of DIS/MoDiC CD 27.0).
IMPORTANT:
There is no "panic" function of DWA alarm on E36/7 vehicles. Pressing and holding the right, lower key button only activates the interior lights.
PROCEDURE
Step 1 Modifying the SA line of the ZCS code after installing a DWA Alarm Kit.
The GM and VN lines of the ZCS coding remain unchanged. The last character and the fifth character from the right should be changed in the SA line, according to the tables as shown:
Example: the original SA line is - 00004026A2E00CD8 F
The fifth character from the right (in this example 0), should be changed by advancing 4 characters (in this case to 4) according to Selection Table shown.
The last character (in this example F), should be changed by advancing 12 characters (in this case to R) according to the selection Table shown.
STEP II: Recoding instrument cluster (Kombi) using the modified SA line:
1. Connect diagnostic connector of DIS Plus/MoDIC to the vehicle.
2. Turn the key ON (KL15).
3. Select "Coding/Program."
4. Select "3. ZCS Coding". Scroll right >.
5. "Coding by means of central coding code (ZCS) Version C26.0" is displayed. Scroll right >.
6. "ZCS encoding can be overwritten by the modifications made by the CAR/KEY MEMORY program. They can be reset if necessary" is displayed. Scroll right >.
7. Select the appropriate engineering series ("4. E36"). Scroll right >.
8. Select "1. Recoding". Scroll right >.
9. Select "10. KOMBI". Scroll right >.
10. Display "KOMBI has been selected. Select. Correct?". Select "Yes".
11. "KOMBI Install control unit so that it works properly. Turn ignition on!" is displayed. Scroll right >.
12. "Chassis number:... - Change?". Is displayed. Select "No".
13. The ZCS code GM, SA, and VN lines are displayed. "Change?" is displayed. Select "YES".
14. "KOMBI Enter/change coding code. Pay attention to notes on input!" is displayed. Scroll right >.
15. "Enter GM: GM... Confirm input/indication?" is displayed. Do not change the GM line. Select "Yes".
16. "Enter SA: SA... Confirm input/indication?" is displayed. Using touch-screen keypad, enter the new (previously modified) SA line. Then, select "Yes".
17. "Enter VN: VN... Confirm input/indication?" is displayed. Do not change the VN line. Select "Yes".
18. The ZCS code GM, SA, and VN lines are displayed. "Identification correct?" is displayed. Select "YES".
19. "Kombi Start automatic coding?" is displayed. Select "Yes
20. When coding is complete, "KOMBI The central coding code has been changed! Coding Complete! New central label required! Write or print out new central label and affix to car! Turn ignition off. Wait 10 seconds. Turn ignition on again and carry out the functional check." is displayed.
Step III: Recording GM
1. Select "Coding/Program."
2. Select "3. ZCS Coding". Scroll right >.
3. "Coding by means of central coding code (ZCS) Version C26.0" is displayed. Scroll right >.
4. "ZCS encoding can be overwritten by the modifications made by the CAR/KEY MEMORY program. They can be reset if necessary" is displayed. Scroll right >.
5. Select the appropriate engineering series ("4. E36"). Scroll right >.
6. Select "1. Recoding". Scroll right >.
7. Select "11 ZVM II/GM (ZKE IV)". Scroll right >.
8. "ZVM/GM has been selected. Select. correct?" is displayed. Select "Yes".
9. "ZVM/GM Install control unit so that it works properly. Turn on ignition!". Scroll right >.
10. "GM IV Start automatic coding?". Select "Yes".
11. When coding is complete, "GM IV The central coding code has not been changed! Coding Complete! Turn ignition off. Wait 10 seconds. Turn ignition on again and carry out the functional check." is displayed. Coding process has been completed. Perform functional check of the DWA Alarm system.
