SUBJECT:
E46 330xi and E36 Z3 with M54 3.0 Hesitates, Stumbles at Idle

MODEL:
330xi with M54B30 produced up to 8/00
Z3 roadster, coupe with M54B30 produced up to 8/00

Situation:
Vehicles equipped with M54 engine may hesitate and stumble at idle, especially when turning the steering wheel. No fault codes are stored in the DME.

Cause:
DME/ECM calibration.

Correction:
On a customer complaint basis only, reprogram the DME with CD23 (after loading "CD23 update")

Procedure:
Check the DME/ECM for fault codes. If no fault codes are present, reprogram the DME with DIS/MoDic programming P23.1. ( P23.1 is loaded with the "CD23 update" disc only)

If fault codes are present, diagnose/repair the vehicle to correct any malfunctions. This reprogramming will not address any malfunctions that will cause fault codes to be stored in the DME.

The numbers* shown will be displayed in the DME after programming with P23.1.

After programming, align the DME-EWS, clear all adaptations, and clear DME/EGS fault codes.

IMPORTANT:
If the idle was previously raised, reset the idle to "basic" value in the Idle Calibration test plan:

Under "Function Selection", select:

1. "Service Functions"

2. "DME",

3. "Calibration Idle Speed"

4. "Test Plan".

5. Select "3 Reset idle speed to basic value"

6. Select "4 End with programming"

7. Follow the direction outlined in the test plan to complete the procedure.
