SUBJECT
Convertible Top Material Pulls Away From Rear Window Trim

MODEL
E36/7 (Z3)

SITUATION

Convertible top material may pull out of the plastic channel of the rear window trim, especially at the fold points.

CAUSE

Once the convertible top material has pulled away, the adhesive strip around the rear window loses its stickiness, and the material will not stay in place.

CORRECTION

On a customer complaint basis, apply high performance contact adhesive.

PROCEDURE

1. Unlatch the convertible top to release the tension on the material.

2. Carefully clean the inside of the convertible top material and the adhesive strip in the area where the material is loose with mineral spirits and allow it to dry.

3. Brush an even coat of convertible top adhesive (3M 1357 High Performance Contact Adhesive) inside the convertible top material and on the adhesive strip. Press the convertible top material into the plastic channel by inserting the edge of the material into the plastic channel. Put pressure on the inside of the convertible top and rub vigorously on the outside to set the adhesive.

4. If for some reason the above repair does not last, the rear window should be replaced. Carefully clean off all old adhesive inside the convertible top material before installing the new window.
