Replacing Pulse Generator For Inlet Camshaft (S62)
Interrogate fault memory of DME control unit.
Switch off ignition.
The instructions apply to removing and installing both pulse generators for the left and right inlet camshafts.
Illustrations show removal of the left pulse generator for inlet camshaft.
Installation location is at rear of cylinder head.
E39 only:
Release retaining clips (1).
CAUTION!
The air duct can brake at the firewall if not carefully removed and installed.
Carefully twist air duct (2) upwards until it is no longer locked in firewall. Pull air duct (2) forwards and remove towards top.
E52 only:
To remove left pulse generator for inlet camshaft:
Remove left partition wall for equipment compartment.
To remove right pulse generator for inlet camshaft:
Remove right partition wall for equipment compartment.
E39 and E52:
For a better overview, the following work steps are shown on an engine that has been removed.
Release screws (1).
Remove bracket (2).
Disconnect plug connection (3) for left knock sensor pair.
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Release screw (2).
Remove pulse generator for inlet camshaft (3).
Installation:
Check seal (1) of pulse generator, replace if necessary.
NOTE:
Interrogate fault memory of DME control module.
Check stored fault messages.
Rectify faults.
Then clear fault memory.
