SUBJECT
Clunking Noise When Driving Over Bumps

MODEL
E46 (3 Series) up to October 2002 production.

SITUATION

Clunking noise is heard from the rear of vehicle when driving over bumps. The vehicle may also stand at an angle.

CAUSE

Broken rear barrel-type coil spring.

CORRECTION

Replace the defective rear coil spring per Repair Instruction 33 53 000. Improved coil springs have been introduced in production since October 2002.

PROCEDURE

Consult the Spring Table on Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) for the correct part number.
