Multi Function Steering Wheel (MFL)
Multi-Function Steering Wheel
The MFL on the E39 corresponds to the E38 system. It is comprised of the Key pads on the wheel, the MFL control module and the I/K bus link.
The right side key pad contains the buttons for the cruise control system and the Recirc air button (if a heated steering wheel is installed, the control button for the heated wheel replaces the recirc button).
The left side key pad contains the buttons for the radio and telephone on the 540i.
Both of the key pads are microprocessors that take the input request and produce digital signals that are sent to the control module. The MFL control module processes the signals and sends the output commands to the respect modules.
- The radio/telephone signals are send over the I/K bus to the receivers.
- The signal for recirculation air is sent over the I/K busses to the IHKA control module.
- The signals for cruise control operation are sent over a dedicated data link to the cruise control module.
- The signal for the heated wheel goes directly to the heater module located behind the air bag in the center of the steering wheel.
The operation of each system is discussed in each respective section of the handouts. The MFL control module contains a fault memory that monitors the steering wheel control switches with the exception of the heated wheel switch.
