The E39 has the possibility of two different optional phones.

- The CPT 4000. Portable non vehicle interface telephone (Audiovox). The CPT can be installed in either the 528i or 540i.
- The CMT 3000. Non portable with vehicle interface (Motorola). The CMT 3000 can be installed in the 540i only.

The phone system is carried over from the E38 and includes all of the same features.
