Woodcliff Lake, NJ
Service Engineering

April, 2002

This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 65 12 01 dated April 2002.

SUBJECT
Service Action to Reprogram Alpine CD53 Radio

MODEL
E39 (5 Series), E53 (X5), vehicles produced approximately April 2001 through October 2001

SITUATION
When the car is parked, the Alpine CD53 radio (in dash CD radio, option code 650) causes the bus to wake up at ambient temperatures below 40F. At worst case, the battery could become discharged.

BMW is conducting a Service Action to reprogram affected radios.

In the interests of customer satisfaction, notification letters will be sent to the owners of affected vehicles.

CAUSE
Faulty Alpine CD53 radio, model MF9BE810, with serial number in the range 11311102 - 12028101 as displayed on the MID, or with serial number in the range 10311102 - 10528101 as printed on the label on the case of the radio.

Note:
Replacement CD53 radio supplied under P/N 65 12 6 916 242 is not affected by this problem, regardless of the serial number.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E39 (5 Series) and E53 (X5) vehicles which were produced between April 2001 and October 2001.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION:
Radio replacement under the prior version of this bulletin is no longer an acceptable repair

Check the serial number of the radio as follows:

Turn on the radio, and within 8 seconds, press and hold the "m" button. After approximately 5 seconds, the radio serial number will show on the display. If the radio serial number falls outside the affected serial number range (10911102 - 12228101), no further action is necessary.

If the radio serial number falls within the affected range (10911102 - 12228101), follow the reprogramming steps detailed below.

NOTE:
Replacement CD53 radio supplied under P/N 65 12 6 916 242 is an updated radio, and is not affected by this problem regardless of the serial number. If the vehicle being repaired is a repeat complaint for a dead battery, and has already had the original radio replaced with P/N 65 12 6 916 242, this SIB does not apply, and troubleshooting should be continued to find the root cause. Tip: If the vehicle is fitted with a telephone, battery draw caused by the TCU should be considered (refer to SIB 84 06 01 dated August 2001)

PROCEDURE

1. Connect a BMW approved battery charger to the vehicle.

2. Switch on KL-R (Ignition switch position 1).

3. Connect DIS or MODiC loaded with DIS CD28.1, or later. (To confirm the correct DIS version is loaded: At the "BMW Diagnosis Start" screen, press "Services" / "Version" to bring up the "BMW Diagnosis Version" screen. The top line of this screen must read "DIS Programme V 28.1", or higher).

4. Select "Coding/Programming"

5. Select "Service measures"

6. Select "Radio"

7. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the programming process (approximately 40 minutes using DISplus, and correspondingly longer using MODiC)

Note:
During the programming process, the vehicle must not be touched. Additional loads on the bus systems caused, for example, by doors being opened, could cause the programming to abort.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 321. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-180) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 321 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
