Removing and Installing Automatic Transmission

Note:
After completing work, check transmission fluid level and top up if necessary,
refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid, Testing and Inspection.
Disconnect battery,

Press down interlock (1 - 4) and remove noise insulation cover.

Installation:
Position noise insulation cover and press downwards until interlocks (1 - 4) are heard to engage.
Remove complete exhaust system.
Remove front splash guard.

Remove heat shield and brackets for left and right splash guards.

Brace clamping bush (1) and loosen nut (2).

Installation:
Adjust selector lever, refer to Shift Lever A/T, Adjustments.

Lift out retaining plate (1) with a screwdriver. Remove cable (2).

Remove heat shield (1) on front left axle support.

Remove bracket for oil lines from engine oil sump.

Remove bracket for oil lines from the power steering pump.

Place oil drip tray under engine.
Unfasten banjo bolt (1) (inlet) and remove oil line.

Installation:
Replace sealing rings.
Tightening torque refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.

Unfasten cap screw (2) (return) and pull off oil line.
Move both oil lines to the left side.

Installation:
Replace sealing ring.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.

Support transmission with special tool 00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 0 250.

Unclip cable for oxygen sensors on transmission cross-member.
Unfasten screws and remove transmission cross-member.

Installation:
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.

Remove heat shield (1 - 2).

Unfasten screws.
Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
When tightening screws down: Grip each screw and tighten down nut. This prevents the flexible coupling from being subjected to torsion stress.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.

Brace propeller shaft on center bearing and loosen nuts.

Installation:
Center bearing must be aligned at right angles to propeller shaft.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.

Caution!
Do not let propeller shaft fall into joints.
Joints and rubber sleeve can be damaged on constant-velocity joint.

Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing, remove from transmission output flange and tie up to one side with a thread or wire.

Unlock cable connector and remove.
Unclip cable from transmission case.

Unlock and remove cable connector (1).
Pull cable connector (2) off impulse sensor.

Caution!
If the pulse generator is converted to a new transmission, the pulse generator must be readjusted, refer to Powertrain Management.

Lift off cover.

Unfasten 4 retaining screws on torque converter with special tool 24 1 110.

Note:
Continue turning engine on central screw in enginewise direction.

Installation:
Unscrew and remove special tool 24 2 300 from the torque converter.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.

Fit special tool 11 7 310 between engine oil sump and front axle support.
Turn front wheels to right lock to ensure that center track rod is not subjected to excessive loads when transmission is lowered.
Lower transmission until engine oil pan is located on special tool 11 7 310.

Protect torque converter from slipping out. To do this, insert special tool 24 4 131/ 24 4 132 in recess in transmission case and tighten down.

Unfasten screws.
