Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Procedure

If a vehicle within the range is found to not have cruise control, install the "Z3 2.3 Cruise Control Retrofit Kit" (PN 65 71 0 007 353) according to the procedure listed below.

Important:
The "Z3 2.3 Cruise Control Installation Kit" (PN 65 71 0 007 353) accommodates both the Z3 2.3 roadster (from MY '99 production) and MY '02 M roadster. The only differences in installation instructions when retrofitting the M roadster are:

-- Plastic FCR bracket (PN 61 13 1 382 130) and nut (PN 17 1 11 709 419) both included in the kit may not be needed, since the bracket may be already installed in the factory.

-- Step number 3 ("Coding of Cruise Control") from the kit installation instructions is not needed.

1. Remove driver's side lower trim panel (see BMW TIS Repair Instruction 51 45 180).

2. Remove driver's side knee bolster.

3. Remove lower cover of steering column.

4. Cut and remove cable ties (1) as shown on the illustration.

5. Disconnect black 8-position connectors (2)

6. Depress locking tab (1) and push back the black 8-position male terminal connector (2) from side of the white 12-position connector (3).

7. Temporarily remove the EWS module (1) by removing self tapping 6.5x15 mm mounting screw (2) and loosening (do not remove) the other mounting screw (3). Let the EWS module hang freely.

8. Remove insulation tape from the harness, to locate white 3-position female terminal connector (1) with the following wire terminal positions:

# 1 brown/orange wire

# 2 blue/black wire

# 3 green/white wire.

NOTE:
This connector may be located further forward along the harness, near the A-pillar.

9. Install cruise control switch stalk assembly (1) by inserting it into the channel on RH side of steering column (2), until it locks into position as shown.

10. Position cover (3) over the cruise control switch stalk end (4), and push the cover into its position as shown on the illustration.

11. Place the white 6-position male terminal connector (1) of the FCR interface module/wire harness assembly, into side locking rails of the white 12-position connector (2) as shown.

Note:
The number 6 terminal of the white 6-position female connector is vacant and is located in the uppermost position of the connector.

12. Route cruise control switch stalk wire harness (1) as shown, and connect white 6-position female terminal connector (2) to white 6-position male terminal connector (3).

13. Place black 8-position male terminal connector (4) into side locking rails of the white 6-position male terminal connector (3).

14. Secure cruise control switch stalk assembly wire harness in place with cable ties (1) as shown, positioning the cable ties around the white plastic cable channel, not around the steering column.

15. Re-connect black 8-position connectors together (2).

16. In the "Cruise Control Kit" locate the FCR white plastic bracket (2). Secure bracket to the existing stud (located above the EWS module) using a nut (3).

Note:
On some vehicles the FCR bracket is already factory installed.

17. Route 3-position white connector (1) (previously unwrapped in step 8) over EWS bracket and connect it into FCR interface module (2) as shown.

18. Position FCR interface module (1) into bracket (2) locking rails.

Note:
Make sure that FCR interface module securely locks into the bracket.

19. Neatly secure wires previously unwrapped in step 8 with cable ties.

20. Re-install EWS module (previously removed in step 7) and secure it in place with removed and loosened screws.

21. Carefully cut out area 1 (as indicated on the illustration) in steering column lower cover (2) using a Dremel, or equivalent hand operated variable speed tool (3), with a small router bit as shown.

22. Road test vehicle and perform function test verifying that cruise control functions properly.

23. Reinstall steering column lower panel, knee bolster, lower trim panel and all previously removed or disassembled components.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 318 After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-170) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 318 printed on the label and,

C. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
