PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Engine Oil Viscosity Change

MODEL:
E46 (M3), E36 (M coupe, M roadster) with S54 engine.

SITUATION

Recent studies of the S54 engine have revealed that the oil film of Castrol SAE 10W-60 synthetic engine oil exhibits even better behavior (lubrication properties and oil aging) under all engine speed and temperature conditions when compared to the 5W-30 grade previously approved for this engine.

For this reason Castrol Formula RS SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil (New name = Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil) has been phased into production in 6/2001 and replaces BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Engine Oil previously used on all S54 powered M models.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E46 M3 and E36 Motorsport Z3 vehicles with S54 engines which were produced from 10/2000 - 6/18/2001.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
