SUBJECT
Service Action: Change the Pin Assignment for the SMG Hydraulic Control Unit Relay

MODEL
E46 M3 with the S54 Engine from the start of production through 3/31/04.

SITUATION
Certain M3 vehicles, equipped with the SMG transmission, could experience premature failure of the hydraulic control unit relay. If this should occur, the system would be incapable of building up the required hydraulic pressure necessary to perform shifting. The fault lamp in the instrument cluster would be illuminated indicating system failure.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E46 M3 vehicles with the S54 engine and the SMG transmission which were produced from start of production through 3/31/2004. In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Change the pin assignment of the SMG hydraulic control unit relay by swapping the wires within the relay connector. Replace the hydraulic control unit relay.

PROCEDURE

Disconnect the battery. Remove the cover from the E-box in the engine compartment. Disconnect the connectors from the control modules. Remove the hydraulic control unit relay (K5360) and unlatch the relay connector (X5360) from the control module carrier assembly.

Lift the carrier slightly out of the E-box, push the relay connector out through the bottom of the carrier, and access the relay connector and wiring.

[NEW] Using special tool 61 1 153, pull relay carrier (1) in the direction of arrow until the retaining lugs are raised.

[NEW] Using special tool 61 1 153, pull relay carrier (1) in the direction of arrow until the retaining lugs are raised.

[NEW] Pull relay carrier (2) into first catch (3).

[NEW] Using connector extractor 61 1 136 located in extractor kit # 61 1 150, carefully release the hooks (4) from the red terminal 87 wire from slot 2 of the relay connector and the red/yellow terminal 30 wire from slot 6. Swap wire positions by relocating the red terminal 87 wire into slot 6 and the red/yellow terminal 30 wire into slot 2.

[NEW] Should terminal removal be particularly stubborn with the BMW extractor tool (1), the terminal extractor shown at the bottom (2) can be used as an alternative. It is available from your Snap-On retailer as a special order. Request Stahlwille tool AST 5 1591 N.

Thread the relay connector back through the bottom of the control unit carrier, refit the carrier back into the E-box, and reinstall the relay connector into the correct position on the carrier. Install a new salmon colored hydraulic relay, P/N 12 63 1 742 690, into the connector. Reinstall the E-box cover.

When completed, re-connect the battery, clear the fault memories and reset any presets lost with the battery disconnect.
