ENGINE/TRANSMISSION







The first X5 is equipped with the M62 TU B44 (4.4 liter) engine as introduced for Model Year 1999. A new 3 liter engine M54 will be introduced later in production. All of the mechanical changes introduced on the M62 TU engine are carried over for the X5 as well as the following features:
- Digital motor Electronics Control ME 7.2.
- Variable positioned intake camshaft VANOS system.
- "EML" Electronic Throttle Control System identified as EDK.
- Compact water cooled generator (F-alternator).
- Thermostat controlled transmission fluid/engine coolant heat exchanger system for automatic transmission equipped vehicles.
- Quick connect couplings for radiator/thermostat hoses and transmission fluid lines.
- Non Return Fuel Rail (Running Loss Compliance)
- Cooling System Auxiliary Water Pump

The X5 is equipped with the A5S 440 Z transmission with the "Steptronic" shifter. The tail shaft housing of the A5S 440 Z transmission has been modified to allow the transfer case to be bolted up for use in the X5. The gear ratios for the transmission are as follows:
- 1st gear - 3.57 : 1
- 2nd gear - 2.20 : 1
- 3rd gear - 1.51 : 1
- 4th gear - 1.00 : 1
- 5th gear - 0.80 : 1
- Reverse - 4.10 : 1
