Service Information

February 2002

This Service Information bulletins supersedes Advance S.I. 51 53 01 dated December 2001.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action to Check Rear Hatch Switch

MODEL
X5

SITUATION
The switch to open the rear hatch on 2002 model year X5s has been incorporated into the hatch grab handle assembly, and is not replaceable separately. Assemblies manufactured from October 22 to November 21, 2001 were produced with an incorrect material in the switch that may cause the switch to operate the actuator motor without the switch being depressed. This can only happen while the vehicle is not moving, and is unlocked. If the hatch does unlatch, the driver is warned by the display in the cluster when the vehicle moves, as well as the interior lights coming on.

BMW will conduct a Service Action to check all potentially affected vehicles, and replace any grab handle assemblies that are in the affected range.

In the interest of customer satisfaction, all affected vehicles in inventory must be checked prior to retail delivery, and if the vehicle is found to have a grab handle assembly that is in the affected range, the vehicle must be repaired prior to delivery.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves X5 vehicles which were produced from October 29, 2001 to November 21, 2001.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Model Chassis Number Range

X5 4.4 LH30004 - LH31683
X5 3.0 LH79788 - LH79881
X5 3.0 A LP30955 - LP34034
X5 4.6 is LN78159 - LN78349

PARTS INFORMATION

Since all X5 4.4, 4.6 is, and 3.0 with Premium or Sport package come with the hatch grab handle painted in body color, special part numbers are being created for the purposes of this campaign. Replacement parts will be ordered based on the color of the grab handle.

For administrative reasons, the part number paid on the Campaign Entry claim will be a common number, not related to the color of the part installed on the vehicle.

Since not all affected vehicles will need a replacement part, and inventories will be very limited at first, do not order for inventory. Only order parts as required.

PROCEDURE

Remove the four Torx(r) Screws holding the grab handle to the hatch, and inspect the back side of the assembly for the production date.

The date code is a white ink stamp on the back side of the handle assembly.

The potentially defective parts will show date stamps of 22 OTT. 2001 to 21 NOV. 2001. (The part is produced in Italy. OTT is the Italian abbreviation for October)

If the handle assembly has a date stamp outside of this range, no replacement is needed; reinstall the part. (The illustration shows a date code of 20 OTT. 2001, which is a good part)

If the handle assembly has a date stamp within this production range, order a new part of the appropriate color and install.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 320. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-170) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 320 printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
