SITUATION
Customer may complain of the accelerator pedal feeling "notchy", or not moving smoothly when depressed in small increments. This situation can occur with high ambient temperatures, or if heating is directed towards the foot well area.
NOTE:
Integrity of the PWG "drive-by-wire" system is not being compromised, if such a situation is experienced - pedal movement is not restricted or limited.
CAUSE
Unfavorable friction conditions inside the accelerator pedal, when exposed to higher ambient temperatures (in excess of 140 deg F).
CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, replace the acceleration pedal (and if necessary the adapter plate) with an improved part. For replacement instruction refer to RA 35 40 001, which can be found in BMW TIS.
When removing the acceleration pedal, press down on the locking tab of the adapter plate until the tab passes the second notch (as indicated on the illustration). Then the pedal can be released from the plate.
IMPORTANT
In case the locking tab of the adapter plate brakes during removal, the adapter plate has to be replaced.
PARTS INFORMATION
DUE TO LIMITED PARTS AVAILABILITY, ABOVE LISTED PART NUMBERS SHOULD BE USED ONLY FOR THE TYPE OF COMPLAINT DESCRIBED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN, AND NOT FOR STOCK PURPOSES.
[NEW] Orders for the improved acceleration pedals may be placed as a VOR or a stock order. The VIN is to be placed in the "comment/text" field. It is recommended that the VIN not be used as the P.O. Number. This will prevent using the VIN again for subsequent VIN-specific orders. Only orders with a VIN will be released. All others will be cancelled.
After the order is placed, it will be reviewed to make sure the VIN falls within the production date range listed above. Only orders for vehicles complying with the production date range will be filled.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
